HomeStars review for contractors: how it works and who it suits

An honest HomeStars review from a contractor's point of view: how leads, shortlists and lead fees work, where it helps, where it falls short, and how it compares with owning your own website and leads. Every fact about HomeStars links to HomeStars' own pages.

Full disclosure: we sell a website and lead system for contractors, so we're not neutral. That's why every claim about HomeStars below links to HomeStars' own website, and why we say plainly where HomeStars is the better choice. Everything was checked on 9 October 2026; platforms change their terms, so check HomeStars' current pages before you sign up.

What is HomeStars?

HomeStars is a Canadian platform where homeowners post a job and contractors ("pros") respond. Its homepage showed 25,384 pros, 40+ service categories and 981,379 reviews when we checked (source). It's one of the best-known names in Canadian home services: "homestars" is searched about 9,900 times a month in Canada (Google Ads keyword data, October 2026).

How HomeStars works for contractors

According to HomeStars' own help pages (source):

  1. Create a free pro profile and set the service area where you want leads.
  2. Browse job leads. Each one shows its lead fee up front.
  3. Express interest for free and send the homeowner a short message.
  4. Get shortlisted. If the homeowner likes your message and profile, they shortlist you. You get their verified phone number, and that's when the lead fee is charged.
  5. Follow up fast and win the job. HomeStars says shortlisted homeowners expect your call.

How much does HomeStars cost?

HomeStars says you only pay a fee when a homeowner shortlists you, and that there are no joining fees, membership fees or other costs (source). There isn't one fixed price per lead. HomeStars sets each lead fee from the details the homeowner enters, such as size, quantity and materials, shows it before you respond, and doesn't change it afterwards (source).

Two things to know before you budget:

  • Being shortlisted isn't being hired. You pay the lead fee when you're shortlisted, whether or not you win the job. HomeStars' own explanation is that shortlists are warm leads because the homeowner chose you (source).
  • Credits are limited. HomeStars' credit policy says that if the homeowner replies by phone, email or HomeStars message, they count as reachable and the shortlist isn't eligible for a credit (source).

You'll find older reviews online describing monthly subscriptions. HomeStars' current help pages, dated January 2025, describe the pay-per-shortlist model above with no membership fee. Judge the platform on its current terms.

HomeStars pros and cons

Where HomeStars helps

  • Free to join and free to respond. You only pay when a homeowner picks you.
  • You see the price first. Every lead shows its fee before you decide.
  • A known brand with lots of reviews. Homeowners already use it to compare contractors.
  • Easy to pause. With no membership, you can simply stop responding when you're busy, as HomeStars itself points out (source).

Where it falls short

  • You compete for the shortlist. Several contractors can respond to the same job, so your profile and first message have to stand out.
  • You pay per shortlist, not per job won. Track your shortlist-to-job rate, or the fees add up quietly.
  • The relationship starts on the platform. Your profile and reviews there help you on HomeStars, not on Google.
  • Fees vary job by job, so monthly costs are harder to predict than a flat plan.

Who HomeStars suits, and who it doesn't

It can suit you if you're new or moving into a new city, have spare capacity, write a good first message and call back fast. It's a weaker fit if you're already busy from referrals, you mostly do big jobs where you'd rather not compete for a shortlist, or you'd rather put the same money into a lead source you own.

The alternative: build your own lead source

A website on its own isn't enough. What matters is what happens after someone finds you. Here's what we set up for contractors:

  • A website that gets found for your services and the cities you work in, with tap-to-call on every page.
  • A Google Business Profile that keeps collecting reviews, where local homeowners look first.
  • Missed call text back: when you can't pick up, the caller gets a text from your business number within seconds, so they don't call the next contractor.
  • An instant reply to every website enquiry, so the homeowner knows you've got it.
  • Your customer list in your own app, with one-click campaigns for repeat work and referrals, sent to customers who've agreed to hear from you.

It costs C$129/month, or C$1,290/year (2 months free). No per-lead fees. Your enquiries come only to you.

Should you quit HomeStars?

Not necessarily. Plenty of contractors keep a platform profile while they build their own channel. Track where every job comes from for three months: HomeStars, Google, referrals, your website. Keep what pays for itself. We won't promise your own website replaces a platform in a month; local search takes time. But every homeowner who finds you directly is yours, and you don't pay again to talk to them next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HomeStars worth it for contractors?
It depends on how many shortlists turn into paid jobs. HomeStars is free to join and you only pay when a homeowner shortlists you, so it can work for filling gaps or starting in a new area. Track your cost per job won for a few months and compare it with your other channels.
How much does HomeStars cost?
HomeStars says there are no joining or membership fees. You pay a lead fee when a homeowner shortlists you. The fee varies by job, based on the details the homeowner enters, and is shown before you respond.
Do you pay for HomeStars leads you don't win?
Yes, if you were shortlisted. HomeStars charges the lead fee at the shortlist stage, when you receive the homeowner's phone number, whether or not you get hired. Expressing interest is free.
Can I get a credit for a bad HomeStars lead?
HomeStars has a credit policy, but if the homeowner replies by phone, email or HomeStars message, they count as reachable and the shortlist isn't eligible for a credit. Check HomeStars' current help pages for details.
Does HomeStars have a monthly subscription?
Not according to its current help pages, which say there are no membership fees. Older reviews online describe subscription plans, so make sure you're reading HomeStars' current terms.
What is a good alternative to HomeStars?
For filling gaps fast, another platform might suit you. For customers who come to you alone, the strongest alternative is your own website and Google Business Profile with a system that replies to every call and enquiry. Many contractors use both.
Is WebScaling a HomeStars alternative?
In a way. HomeStars connects you with homeowners who post jobs on its platform; WebScaling builds your own website, number and customer list, so the enquiries that find you directly are yours. One plan: C$129/month or C$1,290/year. See pricing.
